Need nutrition advice for husband —
So my husband has just shown a massive interest in getting in shape. His work schedule just changed to a compressed schedule: 4 10 hour days. He gets paid to PT in the morning so he has been running 4 miles every morning. Now he wants to come home in the evening and make use of the Y membership he pays for every month and strength train in the evening. He said they can be our “dates.” (I’m Sooooooooo excited!) The only problem is that with his 10 hour works days plus 1.5 hour one-way daily commute PLUS a 1 hour YMCA workout, that puts him in the house ready to eat dinner at about 8:30pm.
We can’t be eating dinner directly before bed time! So I suggested we “eat raw” for dinner… to avoid eating bad foods and then hitting the sack immediately and cancelling out all of our hard work during that day. He is up for that!
Well, that poses another challenge. If he is eating raw for dinner, that means he needs to be eating good, solid healthy foods through the day. PLANNED meals. Well, I know what snacks are good for me to eat and what are good portion sizes for me. But I have no idea how to help my husband maintain a good diet throughout his work day. Plus he is 1.5 hrs away from me so it’s not like we can meet for lunch and hold each other accountable.
Any ideas of good snacks I can pack for him for his work day? He leaves the house at 4:45am and isn’t really up for eating anything until after his 7am run. He eats lunch at 12pm on the dot every day and those meals range from a Subway sandwich to a full on Italian meal, depending on his attitude towards his diet that week and who is inviting him to lunch (or not). I would like to pack him a variety of snack food he can eat throughout the day and advise him of a few different lunch options he can choose from throughout the week at different restaurants in the area (ceasar salads, subway sandwich, etc?).
I think I am trying to gain all of the same nutrition information I’ve learned about my own body in the last 10 years about HIS body in the next week. Ha ha. Can anyone give me a heads up?

I have a pretty similar schedule for work, I run in the mornings, Monday, Wendsday, Friday and cycle in the evenings . Then on Tuesday and Thursday I swim during lunch. I take all kinds of snacks to work like wheat gold fish, Almonds are awesome they have alot of protien, nutrigrain bars, sweet and salty nut bars any kind of fruit that will keep without being cold. The thing that helps me the most is I pack my lunch. This not only keeps me on track with my caloric intake but it saves alot of money. He could even pack a breakfast like instant oatmeal or a bagel. If he just loves to eat out usually the local grocery store has a deli and could get a health sandwich from there. He just needs to watch what goes on the sandwiches, like cheese and mayo and what kind of bread stuff like that. Good luck for the both of you.
You should check out bodybuilding.com. They have a lot of nutrition information that helps you figure out what to eat all day while incorporating workouts, even with eating such a late dinner. It’s more about 5-6 meals, instead of breakfast/lunch/dinner type of days. Keeping protein steady throughout the day, etc… I pack 4 meals to bring to work with me daily, all incorporating a good ratio of protein to carbs. Best of luck, I’m glad he’s taking an interest… someday my husband will I hope!
