I went to the Y this morning and simply swam what the beginning training plan called for for this day on the plan (500m). It also calls for a 2M run tonight. I am not sure if I will be able to fit that in, but I would really like to make it happen.
My butt is really, really sore from the bike ride on Sunday. I am not sure if I have ever mentioned this… but I basically have zero bike gear. I do have a bike and I do have a helmet, but that is about it. No bike shorts or pants or gloves or anything else. I also have never had hemorrhoids but I almost feel like I could say I have experienced them because it hurts to sit down — even on soft surfaces such as my car seat or my soft computer chair at work! Oh well.
I have another long ride tomorrow. Or so the plan says so. I think it’s a 10M ride. I would like to get some bike shorts before then, but I am not too sure that will happen either. We’ll see if everything will unfold the way it is supposed to. I CAN tell you that I WILL be back out there next Sunday riding the same 15M course that I rode last Sunday! And while I was swimming this morning I considered swimming a quick 500y before the bike ride on Sunday as a “brick” workout. But I think I might push that until the next Sunday to give myself an extra 10 or so days to work up to that. (We meet in the Y parking lot for the bike ride, so it really is a perfect opportunity!) I only have three more Sundays before the triathlon! That is so crazy!!
Oh, also… a good friend from high school and I just committed to run in the VA 10-miler this September. I actually tried to talk her into the VA Rock & Roll 1/2 marathon instead. Yeah, I know it’s a longer course — but there are bands to keep my mind off of the running, and it’s FLATTER. But… she won’t be in town. So… I am committed… and we are going to do it. I will achieve my goal this year to “learn to love running.” I guess. By July I have to be able to easily run 4 miles.
Boy oh boy. I sure am glad this journal doesn’t quit on me like I always want to quit writing (typing?) in (on?) it!!

Definitely go with the padded bike shorts. That made a huge difference for me. Also try a different seat especially if you’re using the stock seat that came with the bike.
Also, try standing on the pedals with the pedals horizontal when coasting down hill with your weight off your butt. And do some pedaling out of the saddle for relief.
I also shift fore and aft on the seat for a change. It all seems to work well together for me.
I totally agree with the need for bike shorts. They come in all price ranges and are worth it!! Also in reference to the saddle, I really think for girls, a split seat makes all of of the difference in the world. I found some cheap ones on Amazon.com that have been really comfortable. Part of it is going to just getting used to it….before too long you will be able able to go 50 to 70 miles and not feel a thing!!
The spin classes really seem to help me get ready for long bike rides as well. Good luck!
Liz, Liz, Liz. I’ve not been by in a while and here you are going all Tri athlete on me. The shorts are a must. And having ridden on Kim’s bike which has a WSD (womens specific design) seat reminded me that the pelvis is a different shape between the human sexes. Comfort while competing, even if just to finish is priceless.
For your triathlon, you will want to look for some triathlon shorts… unless you’re going to change from your swim suit into your bike shorts, and then out of your bike shorts into running shorts.
Here’s why… swimming with a big bicycle padded bottom will be uncomfortable. Riding your bike with a WET bicycle padded bottom will be uncomfortable… and running with a big bicycle padded bottom will be uncomfortable.
Triathlon shorts have a small bit of padding, but are mostly designed to fit you properly swimming, cycling, or running, and more importantly not hold water…. and dry quickly.
