Tommy made me run

Actually I was telling him how disappointed I was in myself this week. This first week of official tri training season. The first week and I didn’t complete the entire training plan. I suck. I mean… that is how I felt. So he offered to run with  me today. Really the running has become the easy part (gasp!). I know, it’s crazy to see me say that. But, the swimming I really have to plan for — pack a bag, figure out a workout, go, come back and shower, make sure suit is hung in a cool, dry place. It’s complicated. (I’ll admit I can be a little dramatic sometimes.) But the biking is the worst. Because I have this brand new Trek bike that I want to ride, but it’s winter time. So I am forced to go to the gym and use their cycling machines. It’s such torture.

Anyway — these are all just excuses. But not excuses NOT to exercise, just excuses to complain about it the whole time. (sigh)

So Tommy offered to run with me. And we ran in his neighborhood (my future neighborhood) and the hills are torturous. We only ran 1.7 mi’s and I even walked up half of the 1/4mi hill, and we were both totally exhausted at the end. Tommy usually runs 4 mi’s a day with his co-workers, at about 9:30/mi… so I’d say I did work hard, even though the time and distance doesn’t appear that way. He used his BiM Active on his phone but didn’t save it so I couldn’t get the elevation info. Oh well.

I have to cycle today. I still haven’t cycled. I did the swimming and I did the running, but not the biking. I’m tempted to see if I can find some winter-biking gear and just bundle up and ride outdoors. At least it would make for an interesting ride, which is way more than the Y has to offer.

Workout:

  • Type: Run
  • Date: 01/13/2008
  • Time: 09:30:00
  • Total Time: 00:20:00.00
  • Distance: 1.7 miles
  • Average Pace: 11:45.88/mile

  1. You know, I think the winter is the hardest time of year to get out and do things. I fully admit I haven’t run as much as I should because the weather has just been horrible and, well, I’m a weather weanie. And I feel your pain on the indoor bikes. I just can’t do them either.

Jeff cycles a bunch in the winter, and mentions a lot that the key to staying comfortable is to keep your feet and hands warm. So if anything, he would probably suggest you invest in some foot-covers and good gloves.

Keep going! You’ve made such good progress!

  2. It’s tough getting out there in the cold. I would see if they have a cycling class at the YMCA. The spin classes are fun and the instructors give you good tips on form. :)

  3. Chris has done that for me in the past, when he sees I’m getting frustrated with running.

With all the complications, now you know why I don’t do a tri, but stick with being a runner. Just grab my shoes and go… no other parts needed :)
