Learning the ropes of biking

Christy and I met at the park with the intention of riding our bikes on one of the trails. It was a beautiful day and a great opportunity to get some trail riding in.

However, once we got the bikes off of their racks I remembered I needed to pump my tires. (I keep hearing from people that I should “check them every time I ride.”) I haven’t ridden the bike in months so I knew I’d have to pump something. Anyway, turns out (after more than a few attempts and asking other people for help) that I was missing some important cap on my back tire. We had to forgo the bike ride.

We jogged a very slow 1.5 mi’s and walked the last 1/2 mile so we could talk and enjoy each other’s company more. It was nice. The most enjoyable run I can remember having in a while. (Granted I haven’t really ran in a while — but still.)

Afterwards I headed to the bike shop. Sarah raves about these guys and how great they are. I know they are helpful, but I didn’t realize how kind and friendly they were, too! They definitely do more than what their job asks: fix the bikes and make money. They love their jobs! They love cycling! They love to help people learn about bikes and how to take care of them. I received a DVD about bike maintenance and was told about the training courses they offer. One guy talked to me for a good 10 minutes about triathlons and the best way to train with a bike and the importance of bricks. It was neat — some of the stuff I already knew, but they were totally helpful and they didn’t make me feel like the bike idiot that I am!

Tonight I’m going to try my hand at an indoor cycle at the Y. I’d love to take my bike out, but I no longer have a helmet (long story. Okay not really. But not an interesting one.) And the nice weather is supposed to disappear (although so far the forecast is not very accurate). Anyway, I’m really dreading it, to be honest. We’ll see how it goes…

  1. Glad to hear you didn’t just give up on exercising when the bike didn’t work out for you. Your persistence will pay off!

  2. Here’s a tip. Look for the guys (or gals) in the funny pants. We almost always have a bike pump with us :-)

  3. Sounds like a great bike shop!
