I drove an hour to visit my cousin and run this race with her. She has had a nasty cold since Thanksgiving and was up all night coughing so she decided to participate in the 1 mile walk instead of the 5k run/jog. I asked her to take her camera and get a picture of me crossing the finish line. I said “I should be in between 38 mins and 40 mins. And if I come in before that and you miss me, I don’t care because I came in under 38 mins.” And we had a great laugh.

I came over the hill and saw “36:??” on the clock. I couldn’t believe it! I had about nothing left in me, but I still picked it up — I went for longer strides instead of a sprint. Anyway, I came in right when the clock passed 37 minutes. I still can’t believe it. I even walked twice (up two of the six hills).

My cousin didn’t actually get the picture because the 1 mi mark wasn’t marked so they ended up walking a little further and I caught up to them on the way back and I passed her… not sure if you can follow that. The point is there was no picture, but that’s okay.

I wasn’t miserable. The music in my ears helped — and the crowd was much larger and at a LOT of different levels — I definitely wasn’t at “the end” of the pack, like I felt I have been for the last two races. This was the most fun… :)

So — yeah! I’m improving! Pretty dramatically I guess. I guess my body probably could have done this well a week ago… but it’s still cool to accomplish it.

My cousin said she really enjoys the “little races” (she is training for a marathon in February) and wants to start doing one 5k a month or so. So I’ve got another running buddy! Sort of. :) Whew. Tomorrow I am jog/walking 3.5 miles with Krista (ultra-marathoner), I guess I’ll be back to post about that!

Hey — did you know you can claim all your races on your taxes? Since they are donations I guess… that’s neat!

OH — and! I like running winter races — you get pretty cool long-sleeved shirts… :)
